Zain, my son, is
five and a half. Although it’s his fourth
year in school since play group, he
hadn’t pretty much moved on from A, B, C,
D - or at most a set of sight words. His
teachers complained of his
inattentiveness and lack of focus and
that he was way behind in class. Despite
all my efforts, I couldn’t get him
interested in reading or practising
writing and homework was becoming quite
an unwanted task at home. I was also
worried how he would cope with the grade
1 curriculum after six
months.
Then I put him in
the phonics course with Mahrukh. A couple
of other kids from school also joined in.
After the first class, he came home quite
happy and told me they had fun. He would
eagerly wait to go every time and enjoyed
whatever they were
doing.
In the beginning, I
helped him practise reading the lists of
words but by the tenth session he would
not only read the word lists eagerly but
he also started reading billboard shop
signs. Even now, while he is sitting or
playing, he tries to break up every
spoken word and names of
people.
By the end of the
second month, his class teacher started
praising his progress and said he was not
only par with the class but most of the
time he tends to do more than what is
required. If asked to write the vowel
sound in a word, he would write the whole
word.
Zain’s confidence
is improving as he is learning new words
every week. It is one class he loves
going to and waits for. I personally have
never been interested in teaching but
this course got me curious and I have
asked Mahrukh to arrange for a workshop
or a one day session for
parents.
My husband and I
are so pleased and thankful to Mahrukh
and Phonics International. It has given
our son the jump start he needed to begin
his studies in grade 1. As far as Phonics
International is concerned, it is the
most brilliant programme which has
techniques to teach so many similar
sounding words for reading and
spelling.
